Metal Gear Vintage by Nether83 Metal Gear Vintage by Nether83
Found some spare time between work projects and tried some experimenting with vintage filtering and grunge brushes. Decided to pimp my most faved deviation, to look more like an old movie poster found folded in some forgotten drawer in the back of the attic.

For details on the poster itself go to the original submission here: [link]

Effects done in photoshop.

EDIT 15.04.2009: Now available in higher resolution with download. Remember that all things portrayed in the picture are copyrighted to Konami, so no violating of the laws now ok.

I love you for this.

This is how it should've been, and the only way it could've been. This would've been the perfect cast, none of the stars today can measure up.

Wonderful and amazing, in fact I'd go as far to say this is one of the most beautiful things on earth.
I saw your MGS poster before but for me this surpasses it. Maybe it's my 80's fan-boy side taking over !
The vintage/worn effect really enhances this too.

You know Solid Snake was based on a Kurt Russle character Snake Pliskin from Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. There are hints at this through-out the metal gear franchise. So to me ol' Kurt would be the logical choise. Connery is good for Big Boss, my only concern there would be if he could do a convincing voice. But its your poster man so...

That said Great work.

I'm well aware of Kurt Russels influence on Snake. Didn't want to use him as reference though since I went for the original Metal Gear cover pose ripped off the first Terminator movie.

I think this movie was doomed impossible to make from the start.

That said, thank you for your comments.

Thats very nice. Even though it looks like a paintover/tracing of, let me guess; Sean Connery, Richard Crenna, Tom Berenger and Michael Biehn =).
I am a huge MGS fan, and I think you definitely did the series justice.
Btw; I have been checking your thread on gameartisans.org, and I want to wish you good luck in the war.

It probably looks like a paintover/tracing of all the said characters because it is just that, and that's how it's meant to be. The main point is to all the characters to have the exact resemblance of their real life actor inspirations/counterparts. I did this at some time when I had re-played the first MG game. Man did they make games hard, back in the day!

Good luck to you on the war as well. We of great minds need to give each other support. :D

Solid Snake's face is kinda different from the "modern" version, isn't it?
If i may give a critique, i think you should use the modern version, because that face is widely known nowadays...

Aside from the snake's retro face, this is one great poster! Fav it^^~
and I agree with you, Sean is the Big Boss!

There was a reason I didn't want to use his modern face. For one I based all the characters on real actors. Second, I used the original models used in the first games. Third, this is hypothetical movie supposedly done back in the 80's.

Anyways thanks for the crit, comment and fav.

This is very good. I think the effects are excelent. I've always wanted photoshop just to work decent projects like that but don't have that luck. This is a very nice piece. I faved this a while back but never did get the time to comment back on it. The way the characters are set up look slightly familiar, did you use something for referance with that and I remember, I think, that these characters were used as referance in the actual MG:Solid Snake game were they not?

First of all thank you.

Second, I did use some reference pictures. I used the same actors the game designers used back in the day when they made the game and actually for Big Boss and Solid Snake I used the exact same pictures. Except for Snake's head which is a different picture of Michael Biehn.

Great!!! It's really nice to see fans of classic MSX Metal Gears, Metal Gear 2 was a great game, and this piece of art really carries it's spirit.

Thanks. I'm still in the process of playing the second Metal Gear in MSX emulator. I've been quite busy playing all kinds of other retro games on the side. Maybe I'll finish it some day.

Whoa dude. . . :-O Now it looks much more real. . .and it does capture look- as if it were faded by being hung up near a window for years, taken down, folded up just left in a attic for another 5 years or so. . . I want this in a full size poster now. . . like really bad.
